Ham needs an Elmer

Define the word -- Elmer?  In ham radio land the word or name Elmer is the label that got tagged on to that wonderful guy that knew how to fix your broke antenna, make your rig radiate RF, get rid of your RFI in the neighbor's stereo or that terrible case of TVI that is keeping you off the air.  He or She are the one's that show up for the antenna raising or taking down without being asked or asking for anything in return. Elmer's are the real unsung hero's of the amateur radio hobby and everyone can be an "Elmer" because we are all good at something from napping to fixing.

There is no better reward then the helping of someone that is at a disadvantage on a project, tasking or chore that could use a helping hand to overcome a hurdle and you know you can do it.  Volunteering to be a "Elmer" to someone is great even if you don't really know the answer also then you both learn and grow. It makes you better then the person that knew and did not want to be bothered.

DBARA has a group of these hero's that can help you out in your hour of need.  If you have a specialty like "squirrel fishing" let us know and we can put your specialty on the  list so you to can get on the list too.

Friends:

I recently received this email from a newcomer to the area. He wants help setting up antennas and warding off the evils of lightning. Please contact him directly at W2HOG@aol.com to present your offers of assistance. I think we should invite this fellow to a club meeting when he is in town and encourage him to join the club.

“I hope you can help me or send me in the right direction.  I have been a ham for about 10 years now.  I have worked and confirmed 263 countries.  I owned a home in New Jersey with a 50 foot crank up tower and a few beams.  Hard line and mono band radios, done it all.  Now I have a home in New York and a home in Daytona Beach off of LPGA.   In New York, my station is much less, just a 510 for UHF/VHF and a R7 for HF, a far cry from what I had but I am on the air.

Now for my question: I bought the home in Daytona to which I expect to retire in about 18 months or so.  My new wife and I get down there every 5 or 6 weeks for a long weekend and then most of the summer.  We enjoy it very much.  I put an X50 in the attic and have been on the air with it pretty good.  Now I would like to get on HF from there but because of sea air, storm and the REAL BAD lightning would like to try something in the attic also or go with a portable system maybe on a tri-pod in the yard and only set it up when operating.  Can you tell me if any of your members have the same issues and what they are doing to overcome them.  I just found your website and net schedule, I am looking forward to checking in.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Be Safe.  73,

JIM  W2HOG
