Attention All DBARA Members,

Your 50th Anniversary Committee has nearly finalized the planning for the Special Event on October 4, 2008.

Every DBARA member is invited to attend and bring family and friends. We expect to have a super time.

The picnic grounds have been reserved at Bethune Point Park in Daytona Beach. The QSL cards and Special Event Certificates are in Process at the print shop. QST, CQ and World Radio magazines have been requested to print an announcement in their magazines.

The rigs and antennae for two HF stations have been secured. We will be operating HF SSB, CW and digital modes.

However, all the planning and preparation thus far will be wasted unless we get help from a large number of the members. Will YOU volunteer to help? We need lots of people.

Food preparation and service. We estimate a need for at least 4 people. The club will provide hamburgers and hot dogs along with condiments and service items i.e. plates, cups, knives, forks etc. We need someone to shop for and store the above the day before the event. We need cooks and servers (clean-up)
Everyone is asked to bring a plate to pass or dessert or chips, etc. Coffee, soda and water will be provided by the club. Who wants to pick-up and store the drinks? And who wants to ice down the cold drinks and make the coffee?

We have a responsibility to leave the picnic area as clean or cleaner than we found it. So we need a clean-up committee to police the grounds after the event. We need at least 4 volunteers but remember “many hands make light work”.

The club owns a small crank up aluminum tower and a Cushcraft tri-band antenna. We need volunteers to be at the park early in the morning to set it up. We estimate a leader, a safety leader and 4 helpers are needed. The tower also needs a little cleaning, polishing and general maintenance lookover a week or three ahead. We also need help stringing/placing a wire dipole on the morning of the event. All the antennae and related stuff must be removed at the end of the day.

Operation of the HF Stations is an important part of the Special Event. Announcements have gone out. Other stations will be listening and hoping to contact us. We need operators and loggers. This is not a contest, our station operators are encouraged to ragchew with calling stations. Our family members and friends, along with Technician licensees will be able to operate (third party) as long as a General Class licensee or higher is overseeing the operation.

The magazine announcements for the Special Event are for both Saturday and Sunday. We need members at their home stations on Sunday to operate for an hour or two.

When the event is complete and the park has been cleaned up and the rigs and antennae are returned to their owners and put back in service or storage there will be one last thing that must be done. QSL’ing! Cards and certificates must be completed and mailed. That will take time and effort.

We are still looking for suggestions. Do we need to add anything to the list? Maybe we should have a VHF station for repeater and simplex Ops. Does anyone want to volunteer a station?

As you can see, there is little more responsibility involved than a three person committee can handle. We need your help to make this a success. Please volunteer for one (or more) of the positions.

The Committee Members need your help. Please respond with the position YOU will volunteer for via email. Preliminary breakout planning meetings will occur at the next DBARA General Meeting on August 18. Please volunteer!

We had a great meeting tonight. I was very happy to see you all there. Thanks to those of you (and there were many) who spoke to me during and after the meeting about a Special Event. I am encouraged by the positive reaction of each of you. Jose AJ4BN, Bob WF1M and I will work to bring you the Special Event you want. Most of you indicated a preference for a picnic style operation. Some of you also indicated that you would like to operate from your QTH. A few of you talked about operating modes and expressed an interest beyond SSB.

So………. We, your committee, need to get some specific information from each club member. The information requested is needed whether you intend to operate or not. Your response is important. For instance, will you attend the social event? Do you prefer a "potluck" picnic or should we do something like last fall and provide hamburgers, hotdogs, soft drinks etc?

Return to the top of the page

Will you operate at the social event? What mode do you prefer?

Will you operate from home? What mode? What Band?

As you can see there are a lot of questions to be answered so that we can have a successful Special Event. Please, each of you, take a few moments to answer the questions below to help us determine the Club’s desires so we can enjoy the Special Event that you want.

Will you attend a Picnic type event? · Yes · No

Picnic meal. (Choose 1) · Potluck · Club provided food · Combination of A & B

Will you operate at the picnic? · Yes · No

What Mode?    · SSB · CW · PSK · RTTY · Other

Would you like to operate from home before or after the picnic? · Yes · No

What Mode? · SSB · CW · PSK · RTTY · Other · Band

The Club has a lot of planning to do to make this successful. Please respond quickly and provide comments and suggestions to hasten and smooth the path forward.

Thanks for reading and replying
