DBARA General Meeting Minutes July 21, 2008

 

7:30 PM-Meeting brought to order by President John LoCicero K4TUG

 

Introduction of Guests and Members

 

Announcements:

1.      Bob Brannigan W2EJG invited all members to the regularly held Ice Cream Social      Wednesday evenings at 6 PM at the Piccadilly in Daytona Beach at Ridgewood and Bay Streets.

2.      Watch DBARA Yahoo Groups email and listen for announcements on the Club Repeater for the locations of Wednesday Portable Ops

3.      A Testing Session will be held the last Saturday morning of August at the First Presbyterian Church on Grandview.

4.      See Tom Bilello K9WLF for 50/50 tickets

5.      The next Board Meeting will be held August 4th 6:30 PM at the Piccadilly.

 

Old Business:

1.      A Recap was given of the CERT/DBARA Field Day.  The combined effort netted close to 2500 points.

2.      Paul Milward AB4PM gave a progress report regarding planning for the Special 50th Anniversary Event which will be held at Point Bethune Park on Saturday Oct 4th.  The reservations have been made.

3.      Frank Haas KB4T explained voting will be held at the August General Meeting regarding the two proposed DBARA By Laws Membership changes.

4.      A special HamBone College Graduation Certificate was given to Stephanie George.

 

New Business:

1.      Tom Davies brought a motion to vote for the selection of a location for the Annual Awards Banquet.  The two choices were The Whistlestop on Ridgewood and the Golf Course Club House on Wilder.  Motion Seconded by Steve Szabo WB4OMM.  The majority voted for the Golf Course Club House.

2.       Jose Fernandez offered an opportunity to order polo shirts with DBARA Logo.  Samples were available for members to view.

3.      A photo was chosen by vote from among 3 choices for the QSO card design for the Club Special Event.

4.      All were invited to join in leaving recent QST magazines at professional office waiting rooms.  Special stickers are available for this as a possible means to increase membership.

5.      Membership voted to add 5 new members.

6.      Steve Szabo made a motion for the Club to purchase a Rotor for the Antenna to be used on the Club’s portable tower.  Second by Bob Ledford WA4IDI.  The vote to purchase was unanimous.

7.      Coffee and Donut break was held.  50/50 was won by Clay Langston WB8ZMV

8.      Program:  Key Round Up and Demo by Frank Haas after which the meeting was adjourned.

DBARA General Meeting Minutes 5/19/2008

The meeting was brought to order at 7:30 pm by President John LoCicero K4TUG

Guests and Members were introduced.

Announcements:

1.      Tom Davies AA3AS is recuperating from recent back surgery.

2.      See Ted Cardinal KI4VWL for 50/50 tickets.

3.      The next DBARA Board meeting will be held at the Piccadilly June 2nd at 6:30 pm.

4.      Rose Parrack WA1VOP shared information regarding a program called My      Florida Safe Home which helps homeowners assess needs and make necessary    improvements for hurricane preparedness.

Old Business:

1.      .Members are reminded to sign up for activities related to the DBARA 50th Anniversary Special Event.  See Bob Allan WF1M to sign up

2.      Rose Parrack, Belinda Hoyt, KI4QGG and Laura Walker KJ4AQG  held successful Demos at Sweetwater Elementary School for 12 girls and a second Demo in Ormond where 3 girls voiced interest in taking a Ham Radio Class.  Doris Morris NA4Q assisted.

3.      A presentation was given at Horizon Middle School for 14 students.  7 students had an interest in participating in an after hours Ham Radio Club which would enable students to get Ham Radio Licenses and would enable the Radio Club to apply for a Federal Grant to set up a radio station at the school.

4.      Photos appropriate for a QSO card for the DBARA 50th Anniversary Special Event are still being sought by Paul Milward AB4PM and the Event Committee.

New Business:

1.      A Speakers Bureau is being set up to represent DBARA and promote Ham Radio within various community organizations.

2.      Recent Ham Radio Magazines with Club contact info will be placed in area professional waiting rooms.

3.      A HamBone College Amateur Extra Class will begin Sept 3rd 2008.  Prospective Students need to contact Frank Haas KB4T or John LoCicero to enroll.  Students will be expected to purchase the appropriate ARRL Course Manual prior to the start of class. The meat of the theory will be discussed in depth to aid in understanding the material.  The class will be held at the DBCC campus.

4.      Mid January 2009 the next General Class will be held at the Ormond Library

DBARA General Meeting Minutes 3/17/2008

 The meeting was brought to order at 7:30 pm by President John LoCicero K4TUG.

 Guests and Members were introduced.

 Allen Bestwick W1PX gave thanks to DBARA members who helped with the recent Ponce Inlet Lighthouse presentation for Home school Days which served 150 children and other Lighthouse projects.  Those mentioned were Paul Milward AB4PM- Radio Direction Finding, David “Sparky” Lammers AE4DL – Tube Receiver, Jim De Palma KI4TEK- Donation of a receiver, John Donation

 Presidential announcements:

1.      Alfred N. “NEB” Brown has passed away.  All services have been completed privately.  NEB was a regular DBARA meeting attendee and was responsible for emergency communications program at Bishop’s Glen where he and his wife, Beatrice were residents.

2.      See Ted Cardinal for 50/50 tickets.

3.      The next DBARA Board meeting will be held at the Piccadilly April 7 at 6:30 pm.

       Members are reminded to sign up for activities related to the DBARA 50th Anniversary Special Event.  See Bob Allan WF1M to sign up  

New Business: 

Frank Haas KB4T:    

1.      Omar Vargas has applied for membership under the New Ham Membership program.  He was welcomed into the club by a unanimous vote.

2.      The HamBone College Tech Class will begin April 26th.  Prospective Students need to contact Frank Haas or John LoCicero to enroll.  Students will be expected to purchase a 2nd edition 2nd printing of the ARRL Tech Course Manual prior to the start of class.  The Tech class will be held at the Ormond Library. 

Rose Parrack WA1VOP:

There will be a Girls Scout Demo for Leaders in April.  More information will be available at a later date- just prior to the event.  Those wanting to participate in the Demo please see Rose

Tom Davies AA3AS:

1.      Art Byrnes will be the auctioneer for the DBARA Auction at the April Meeting.

2.      After 50/50 Drawing , coffee and donuts will be available to enjoy while the rest of the meeting was dedicated to the Rig Roundup with a good representation of radios of all types present.


DBARA General Meeting Minutes 2/18/2008

The meeting was brought to order at 7:30 pm by President John LoCicero K4TUG.

8 Guests and Members were introduced.

Among guests was Mike Chitwood, Chief of Police DBPD, who gave a short update on activities for crime control in the area.  Chief Chitwood has agreed to come back and speak at length to the Club in September 2008.

Chris Mazola KI4IVN gave a short presentation on efforts to increase the activity of the local CERT project.

Allen Bestwick W1PX gave a short presentation on the Ham Radio Project at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse.  He will return and give a full presentation at the November 2008 DBARA General Meeting.

Presidential announcements:

  1. Robert Cliff Fraser KE4HIY passed away Feb 11th.  Services were well attended by family friends and the Amateur Radio Community.
  2. See Ted Cardinal for 50/50 tickets.
  3. The next DBARA Board meeting will be held at the Piccadilly March 3rd at 6:30 pm.
  4. The Salvation Army SATERN Presentation will be held Feb 25th at 6;30 pm at the Halifax Harbor Boater’s Lounge

David Lammers AE4DL moved that an annual Special Merit Award for Service to the Club be given in the name of Robert Cliff Fraser KE4HIY each year at the Awards Banquet. 2nd Tom Bilello K9WLF  Passed by a unanimous vote.

Old Business:

       Santa Project:  Visiting children in hospitals to allow them to speak with Santa on the Ham radio.  See Jose Fernandez AJ4BN or John LoCicero if you would like to participate next fall.  Jose is handling the liaison with the hospital to arrange the visits.

New Business:

Frank Haas KB4T:

       1. Charlie Blackburn AI4RI has been appointed as Control Operator of the DBARA       Repeater            

       2.  A HamBone College Tech Class will be offered starting the last weekend in April and is to be held at the Ormond Library.  It is planned to allow for more on the air time for the Tech students during these sessions.

Paul Milward AB4PM:

1.      Six Persons attended the recent DBARA Ham License Testing Session.  3DBARA members succeeded in upgrading to General: Jayson Harrington KI4ZAG, Jeff Mathews KG4DHZ, Doug Rice W4TCX.  Lynn Strub K4POO upgraded to General at the recent Ham Fest in Orlando.

2.      The next Portable Op will be held Wed. morning 2/20/08, 11:00 am at Reed Canal Park in South Daytona.  Listen to the repeater announcement or monitor DBARA Yahoo Group for the locations of weekly Portable Ops.

3.      A 50 Year Special Event is in the planning stages. Jose Fernandez and Bob Allen WF1M are on the planning committee.

Rose Parrack WA1VOP:

1.      A report on the recent presentation to a Girl Scout Troops at Warner Christian    Academy

2.      There will be a demo for younger girls in March

3.      There will be a talk and demo for 38 Scout leaders in Ormond Beach in March

Art Byrnes Jr.KA4WDK gave a report on the success of the Bunny Hunt at the recent Ham Fest in Orlando.

Tom Davies AA3AS:

1.      The program for March will be a Rig Roundup.  See Frank Haas to arrange to demo radios.

2.      Art Byrnes will be the auctioneer for the DBARA Auction in April.

3.      February program given by Art Petteway WB4MNK on PSK 31

Old Business:

Reading of the Treasurer’s Report and Minutes waived and accepted as posted on the DBARA website. Motion by Lynn StrubbsK4POO, 2nd K9WLF. Passed- unanimous.

Tom Davies AA3AS gave a Banquet Report.  2 Awards not given at the Banquet, due to absence of the recipients, were given at the Club meeting. David Jollymore WA1RWO received a Service Award and 1 year paid membership for his diligence in handling the Sunday DBARA Net.  David Sparky Lammers AE4DL received a Certificate of Merit for his help and kindness in helping Hams with their antenna projects.

New Business:

DBARA Board Meeting will continue to be held at the Piccadilly Cafeteria on Ridgewood in Daytona Beach at 7 pm on the first Monday of each Month.

Joe SRoyal K2SAN has been appointed as Club Historian.

Jeff Mathews KG4DHZ will continue as Special Advisor to the President

Paul Milward AB4PM announced:

  1. The next Portable Op for Wed January from 11 am to 2 pm at Reed Canal Park.
  2. There will be an open testing session 9 am Saturday Feb 16th at the Presbyterian Church on Grandview, Daytona Beachside. 
  3. Interested persons will meet to convoy to the HamCation

The DBARA Theme for 2008 is “Let the Good Times Roll”

A special plaque was awarded to Tom Davies AA3AS for his Leadership as Club President for the last three years.

New brochures have been designed and printed up.  One is especially designed for use with Rose Parrack’s Girl Scout Project. 

Rose Parrack WA1VOP gave a report on the program presentation she and Belinda Hoyt KI4QGG gave 2 weeks previously at a Girl Scout Meeting.  They gave a 10 minute presentation to the girls who were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders.  They have received a call with interest in a Ham Radio Demo. 

Hambone College Report by Bill Schwartz  WS1C– Head Teacher of the current General Class.  There are 12 students in the class.  All are successfully completing their assigned homework and attending sessions regularly.

 New Project for 2008- Santa Project in local area hospital pediatrics wards.

DBARA GENERAL MEETING MINUTES 11/19/2007

The meeting was brought to order at 7:30 pm by President Tom Davies AA3AS.

Guests present: Doug Rice KI4ZBL Ormond Beach, new Tech and a gentleman named Jerry who is not yet a Ham.

New Member:  Robert Allan WF1M, Motion by Bob Ledford WA4IDI, Seconded Tom Bilello K9WLF Membership was unanimously approved.

Awards Banquet: Dec. 9th Country Harvest Buffet.  Tickets are still available and will be available at the door. $14.00 ea.  A long list of Door Prizes was read.

DBARA Annual Election of Officers by paper ballot: procedure was explained by Frank Haas KB4T.  The Election Committee, consisting of Lynn Strub K4POO, Ted Cardinal KI4VWL, and Charles Blackburn AI4RI, handled the ballots and the counting of votes.

50/50 Drawing: $34.00 won by David Lammers AE4DL

The DBARA Membership Roster will be uploaded to Club email in a password protected format.

Treasurers Report was read and unanimously approved

Donation to the Church for their kindness still needs to be presented. John LoCicero will make an appointment for a meeting with their representatives.

Election will be held next General Meeting 11/19/07 by paper ballot. Frank Haas will prepare ballot with space for write-ins (with the candidate’s approval) and also a tally sheet.  Approved with one dissenting vote.

Candidates should submit a short introduction by email to the DBARA Yahoo Group prior to the election.

The Nominating Committee will also be handling the Election and Ballot Counting.

A request for Nominations for Awards will be posted to the Yahoo Group.

Nov. 9th the School Teaching Team will be making two presentations at Campbell Middle School.  They will be using the 15 repeater between 10 am and 12 noon.  John LoCicero will notify members to be on the radio to speak with the children and help with the demonstration.

 New Business: 

It was decided that the Club Roster should be reposted with changes to respect the wishes of those who do not want personal information posted.

Motion so moved by John Locicero, simultaneously seconded by Jeff Mathews and Paul Milward.  Approved unanimously.

Meeting brought to order at 7:30 pm

 

Visitor Recognition: 6 guests present

 

Member Introduction

 

Club Picnic to be held at Holly Land Park in Holly Hill on this upcoming Sat from 11 am to 4 pm.  Hamburgers, hotdogs, buns, condiments, soda and water to be provided by DBARA.  Side dishes to be provided by participants. Contact Tom Bilello K9WLF to sign up.

 

Hambone College:  next class offered will be a General Class in Jan 2008.  Contact Bill Schwartz WS1C or John LoCicero K4TUG for sign up or more information.

 

There is a nice compliment of candidates for office to be voted on at the Nov General Meeting. Special thanks go to Lynn Straub KI4ZTS and Ted Cardinal KI4VWL organizing the candidates.  Due to the large number of candidates there will be a secret ballot.

 

Announcements:

Robert “Cliff” Fraser KE4HIY is in the hospital.  Visits, cards and phone calls are welcome.

Joe SRoyal K2SAN has info on Code learning tapes

Bob W4MB ph 761-2436 has a 32’ Crank up Tower available

Paul Milward AB4PM – the next Portable Operation will be held on Wed. morning at North Central Park in Ormond Beach.

VE Testing Session will be held starting at 9 am at the Church on Sat Nov 3.

Frank Haas KB4T will be liquidating excess equipment.  See him for details.

Nov 9th there will be a need for operators to be on the air from 9am to noon to help with a children’s net to be held for two classes at Campbell Middle School.
