We It started out almost as planned but it started going down the hill long the week before. Many of our key players elected to go play somewhere else. But a plan is a plan and the foundation had already been excavated and the footers bought, poured and drying. As usual for me lately I could not get myself in gear to get there on time. When I arrived about 0930, Frank Haas KB4T, Charlie Blackburn AI4RI, and Tom Davies AA3AS were hard at work laying everything out and getting the ropes up in the trees for the big 80 meter doublet, 400 Ohm ladder line antenna. Once everything was in the air, Tom and I set about making the pavilion safer for pedestrians by tying up the ladder line and Frank and Charlie set about unloading the radio gear and positioning it. Then Tom's legs and back started to give him fits so he delegated himself to bench supervisor for a while. Charlie added a 10th antenna to Frank's already crowded truck roof line for 2 meters. Frank and I set about hooking up and roping off the generators and fuel storage area. Hooking up and testing the radio gear followed. Charlie immediately assumed the duty of trying out the radio and antenna by making several logbook pages of testing contacts between 1100 and 1400 hours. While the rest of us just sat around, kibitizing with visitors and having lunch. Tom Davies had to give up and take his aches and pains home so they could rest. Thanks for the help Tom! The official log keeping started on time at the appointed hour of 1400 with Frank and Charlie doing the duty. The only problems encountered with the whole deal were minimal, the generator ran out of fuel right in the very middle of making one contact. The other station was still on frequency when we powered back up and the exchanged finished for a official contact. My voice took a hike when I sat down to spell Charlie and Frank. But John KG4ZFU took my place and continued to carry the torch. The official setup crew: Frank Haas KB4T, Charlie Blackburn AI4RI, Tom Davies AA3AS, and Bob Ledford WA4IDI. The official operators: Frank Haas KB4T, Charlie Blackburn AI4RI, John Bisanti KG4ZFU and Bob Ledford WA4IDI. The official guest list: Johann Haas, John Bayne, N4EEB (now an Extra Class Op), Andy Byrd, KE4CTW, Darrell Brock N4GOA and grandson Conner, Carolyn Truesdale KI4VWP and daughter Jennifer, Art Byrnes KA4WDK and son AJ (came by Segway), Leslie Peruzzi N1MO, Jim Gibson WD4CPC, Steven Wilkins KI4LKD, Ed Mitchell AA1ED, Jennie Blackburn, wife of Charlie also the provider of a big bag of bagels and cream cheese for Charlie's lunch and Anne Ledford. We had one visitor that stood out above everyone and that was a citizen who we decided to name "Mr. Jeep." Mr. Jeep is a CB'er who was having a problem with getting his newly installed CB radio and antenna to hear or talk. Bob gave him several items to check and a tip on a professional repair shop if that did not fix it. We officially abandoned our site at 1800 hours leaving it cleaner then when we got there. Thank you everyone that participated either in setup, operating, visiting or tear down and storage. [Now to get busy and edit photographs and get them ready for installation.] 06.24.2006
